Virtual Reality is an amazing concept which came into reality 6 years ago. VR devices became the headlines in tech world and were released to mainstream market. Devices like Oculus rift, HTC vibe and PlayStation VR were launched with few tech demos and quite a few fully fledged games. Devices like google cardboard and galaxy gear VR, focused on mobile platform, were also released. "The future is here" is what the fancy tagline used by the people when they were released. But "Is the future really here?" is the bigger question that needs to be answered till now.
In this article, or rather a short post, I would like to share my opinion on the state of Virtual reality in the present and in upcoming years. Its totally subjective and I don't want anyone in the comment section or mail me with facts and statistics that I'm wrong or state you-did-poor-research type of criticisms.
I'm sure Virtual reality has lot of other applications OUTSIDE gaming and they are actively developing and updating the existing technology to aid people, but when it comes to gaming, does it have a future or have a potential growth in future. Now, VR gaming is basically tech demos, gimmicks to be more specific. Sure there are games that have a lot of content and can be considered "complete" games. But the devices that support them still have not completely reached the mainstream audience. VR devices are just an add-on rather than another platform like consoles, PC where gamers spend most of the time.
Its more like Kinect or move rather than the next generation consoles. So there is a possibility that, after the failure of Kinect and PlayStation move, Virtual reality could also die. But there is also a possibility that it could cherish and revolutionize gaming in a way that we only have seen in Sci-fi books and movies.
Currently there are considerable amount of VR titles on both mainstream gaming and mobile gaming. But most of them are like demos and doesn't have a lot of replay value. No one wants to wear a heavy helmet on their head and do gaming for a longer periods of time (and please don't say me its not so heavy. It's still uncomfortable). So
unless they make it comfortable to wear like in the form of a eye
glasses or contact lenses [which seems too sci-fi], I don't see
it lasting very long.
Virtual Reality is really a groundbreaking technology that could do wonders in many fields. But when it comes to gaming, it struggles to make a stand. They are struggling to maintain the quality that they launched with rather than struggling to improve. It's like they are stuck and reached an end point. They are no promising games in 2018 that would push VR into the market more. So unless they focus on developing more AAA quality games with complete optimization rather than stripping down the existing games and porting it, Virtual Reality gaming is technically dead.
